This winter will be remembered as one of the coldest in recent history – with record-setting temperatures from the “Polar Vortex” and more winter storms on the way. Freezing temperatures in the South keep plumbers like us extremely busy. That’s because we Southerners are not normally prepared for such cold conditions. But at Hubb Plumbing, we know that busted pipes are expensive and we want to help you prevent them!
Q: How cold does it really have to get for my pipes to freeze?
A: Although it depends on how exposed your pipes are, the average temperature for pipe vulnerability in the Southern U.S. is 20°F.
Q: What causes pipes to burst?
A: Expanding ice causes the burst indirectly by building up pressure on the remaining water in the pipes. That’s why the damage is usually not in the same place as the ice.
Q: Does the water-dripping thing work?
A: Turning your faucet on to a slight drip can be a great temporary fix. This allows the pressure to be relieved if pipes do freeze. If you know it will be cold for a short amount of time, it will be worth the small uptick in the water bill.
Q: What are some other ways to prevent frozen pipes?
A: The very best way is to make sure pipes are safe – build them in the interior of the home. If your pipes are exposed, pipe sleeves or a warm lamp can prevent ice build up. Also, ensure that there are no cracks in house insulation that could expose pipes to the frigid temperatures.
Q: What do I do if I think my pipes are frozen?
A: If you turn your water on and nothing comes out – don’t take your chances. Turn off the main shut-off valve. If you can locate the freeze, a hairdryer can help slowly defrost the pipe. But, a plumber is your best bet to prevent a blowout at this point.
